Eminem And B.o.B Collaboration Leaks Online

The track, 'Things Get Worse,' features Em revisiting his Slim Shady persona.
By Jayson Rodriguez

Holy split personality!

An unreleased Eminem and Bobby Ray collaboration was unearthed online Thursday (February 24) that finds the two MCs tapping into their respective manic alter egos, Slim Shady and B.o.B

The mid-tempo track, "Things Get Worse," harkens back to Em's early days and his button-pushing rhymes.

"Note to Jessica Simpson, let's go with the tuna casserole," Eminem raps in one of the verses. "'Cause I used to love her hooters, now Carmen Electra's cuter/ Strap an extension cord to her arm and electrocute her/ I'm off my f---ing meds but I'm on an electric scooter/ I might just scoot by and shoot my mom in the neck with Rugers/ Spit in Jason's face while I vomit on Freddy Krueger/ They can't even get Jeffrey Dahmer to pet the cougar."

"There's no need to say sh-- you already know, the question is just how far will this go," B.o.B chants on the chorus. "'Cause I will never lay down and I will never let up."

"I guess things are gonna get much worse 'fore they get better," Em chimes in.

The song appeared on the blog of one of B.o.B's managers, but there was no message indicating where the track will wind up or how long ago it was recorded.

After scoring three top 10 hits on the pop charts with his debut album, B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray, the rapper/singer said he wanted to return to his more lyrical roots before starting his next project.

In December, he released a mixtape, No Genre, that reminded his early supporters of his abilities, which he displays capably on "Things Get Worse."

"I pass by people on the street, they seem like sleeping zombies," he raps. "Stiffer than a therapeutic pair of jeans you running/ So can you hear me coming?/ Eminem, this beat is absolutely disgusting/ It's probably got diseases on it."

It's not the first time the two stars have appeared on the same track, as Eminem also was featured on B.o.B's Grammy-nominated "Airplanes, Part II" remix.

Have you heard Eminem and B.o.B's "Things Get Worse" collaboration? If so, share your opinion in the comments.

Chris Brown Will Still Appear On 'Dancing With The Stars'

ABC reportedly won't press charges against the singer after his backstage tantrum at 'Good Morning America' studios.
By Jocelyn Vena

Despite Chris Brown's backstage outburst at the "Good Morning America" studios on Tuesday after host Robin Roberts questioned him about his life following his 2009 assault of Rihanna, the singer still will appear on another ABC show next week.

A network rep confirmed to EW.com that Brown's scheduled performance on "Dancing With the Stars" next Tuesday will go on as planned. Meanwhile, TMZ reports that ABC has no plans to press charges against the singer over the tantrum.

The incident left many wondering if Brown had violated his probation in some way. E! News reported that plainclothes detectives arrived on the scene shortly after the outburst. TMZ pointed out that if New York prosecutors don't press charges, then the singer wouldn't have violated his probation and should avoid any further trouble with the law. MTV News contacted the Los Angeles County Probation Department about the matter, but they said they "were unable to comment."

Shortly after his reported meltdown, Brown was spotted playing basketball at New York's West 4th Street Courts. In photos posted online, the singer appeared in good spirits, smiling as he played out in the open. E! News further reported that his post-"GMA" schedule included a stop at the Opera gallery, where he appeared "really happy and in a great mood."

A release party held in honor of Brown's F.A.M.E. album at Webster Hall on Tuesday night also went on as scheduled, MTV News confirms from sources. Video posted online shows the embattled singer performing at the event.

A source told People.com that Brown has "been trying to move on from his past and focus on his music, and he's finally putting out an album. Why can't we focus on that? He makes great music and he loves his fans. He's a good kid."

What are your feelings about the Brown incident? Should he be allowed to perform on "Dancing With the Stars"? Share your opinions in the comments.

Eminem Overtakes Lady Gaga As Facebook's Most 'Liked' Living Artist

He could soon surpass the late Michael Jackson as the site's overall most liked.
By James Montgomery

Eminem
Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage

By his own admission, Eminem "doesn't know how to work a computer," but that hasn't stopped him from overtaking Lady Gaga as the most "liked" living artist on Facebook.

Earlier this week, Em eclipsed Gaga to claim the title of Facebook's most-liked, as he currently counts more than 28,975,000 fans to LG's 28,926,000, according to Billboard. Eminem is currently averaging more than 500,000 Facebook "likes" a day, and could soon surpass none other than Michael Jackson to become the site's overall most-liked artist, according to Famecount, a site that tallies the "top social network stars worldwide." The late King of Pop currently has more than 29,183,000 Facebook fans, giving him a slight edge over the hard-charging Em.

Of course, when it comes to overall social influence, Eminem still trails both Gaga and Justin Bieber in total YouTube views — though he recently became the third artist to crack the 1-billion-view mark — and when it comes to total Twitter followers, his 3 million are barely enough to crack Famecount's top 20 musicians: Gaga is #1, followed by the likes of Bieber, Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Rihanna and, uh, Jessica Simpson.

Then again, all signs seem to point to Eminem's social media profile only increasing. He shows up in Dr. Dre's much-anticipated "I Need a Doctor" video, which premiered on Thursday, and just last week, he grabbed headlines when on-set photos from his upcoming "Space Bound" video — featuring porn star Sasha Grey — began making the rounds ... and just in case you were wondering, Grey has more than 110,000 Twitter followers of her own.

Chris Brown Recalls Making Justin Bieber 'Kind Of Mad'

F.A.M.E. singer was late to their 'Next 2 You' recording session.
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Rebecca Thomas

Chris Brown
Photo: MTV News

Aside from his latest controversy, Chris Brown is back with F.A.M.E., which stands for "Forgiving All My Enemies" and "Fans Are My Everything." On the new album, Brown has some choice features from stars such as Lil Wayne, Tyga, Ludacris and Justin Bieber.

"Working with Wayne is always incredible," said Brown, whose "Beautiful People" video premiered Tuesday on MTV's "The Seven." "I've had Wayne on every single album I've done. ... Being able to work with these guys is incredible. I build most of my collaborations off of just the relationships that I've built with these guys over the years and then new relationships, like Justin Bieber."

Brown told MTV News that it was awesome getting Bieber on board for "Next 2 You." Brown became interested in featuring the teen star on his album after the duo worked on the remix to Bieber's track "Up," which was featured on Never Say Never - The Remixes.

"Being able to collab with [Bieber] was great," Brown said. "He's a young, energetic cat, so being able to work with him, with the fanbase he has, was incredible. I know a lot of little girls are going to love this record.

"I wouldn't say [he's] my protégé. He's doing his thing at a young age, and I was doing mine at a young age, so being able to see him come up is dope."

Brown explained that the two of them didn't quite get into the studio together, however.

"I actually stood him up on accident," Brown recalled. "He was kind of mad ... I was all the way on the other side of town handling some business, 'girl business,' and I was rushing back, and by that time, he's like, 'Man, I'm leaving, bro. I did it — just check it out.' And I looked at it and listened to it and I was like, 'Man, this is crazy.' ... He's a great kid."

Chris Brown Parts Ways With Rep After 'Good Morning America' Incident

Tammy Brook reportedly left singer's camp on Friday.
By James Montgomery

Chris Brown on "Good Morning America" on Tuesday
Photo: ABC

The fallout from Chris Brown's post-"Good Morning America" outburst continued on Friday (March 25), when The New York Post's Page Six reported that the singer has parted ways with his publicist, Tammy Brook.

Brook, who also reps athletes like Mike Tyson and Chris Bosh, could not be reached for comment by the newspaper, but according to other reports, she "quit" the job.

A source tells MTV News that the decision was mutual, but regardless, the news caps off a tumultuous week for Brown, who allegedly smashed a window at ABC's Times Square studios following his interview with Robin Roberts, in which she repeatedly brought up his 2009 assault on then girlfriend Rihanna and the subsequent legal drama that followed. Brown then reacted to the interview in a (since deleted) tweet that read, "I'm so over people bringing this past sh-- up!!! Yet we praise Charlie Sheen and other celebs for [their] bullsh--."

That interview occurred on Tuesday, the same day Brown dropped his F.A.M.E. album, and hours before he was set to appear on MTV's "The Seven" to premiere his brand-new video for the single "Beautiful People," an appearance he subsequently canceled. Later that night, at his album release party, Brown was reportedly in great spirits. He has also apologized for the "GMA" incident, saying on BET's "106 & Park" that he was "disappointed in the way [he] acted."

All that drama hasn't affected his album sales, though. According to Billboard, Brown's F.A.M.E. album is set to debut atop the albums chart next week, with projected sales of 250,000-300,000 copies.

Yelawolf Recalls Meeting Eminem For The First Time

Shady Records rapper also tells MTV News' 'RapFix Live' that Em got him to curb his drinking.
By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Yelawolf
Photo: MTV News

When Yelawolf first met his new boss, Eminem, the meeting couldn't have been more casual.

"He said, 'What's up? I'm Marshall,' " Yelawolf recalled to MTV News on Thursday's (March 10) "RapFix Live."

The meeting obviously went well: Yela is the latest recruit to Em's Shady Records empire, along with Slaughterhouse (Joe Budden, Crooked I, Joell Ortiz and Royce Da 5'9".)

Yela and Em talked in Detroit after producer Jim Jonsin and Eminem's manager urged the rapper to listen to the upstart's music. They shared similarities in their upbringing, and the partnership paid off immediately when the Grammy-winning superstar bestowed the young lyricist with advice, according to Yela.

"I'm a drinker; I drink a lot," he explained. "My management was concerned about some advice he could give me about slowing down so I don't get caught up in that life. He told me if it gets to the point where you need a drink before you go onstage, like you require that to function, is when you need to check yourself. And honestly, that's where I was at that point. And I've changed. I don't drink before I perform anymore."

The Alabama rapper will stick knock back a beer, but he's given up overdoing it before shows. Now, he says, he's enjoying himself more and his confidence has grown.

And that courage helped when he first played Eminem his debut album.

"I'm super excited about the music and fully confident that it's jamming," he said. "I was a little nervous, but after we broke the ice and really chopped it up, he seemed excited about it. So that makes me twice as excited now."

What do you think of Yelawolf's music? Let us know in the comments!

'American Idol' Saves Casey Abrams, But Can He Win?

Judges' save only delayed the inevitable for Matt Giraud and Michael Lynche in previous seasons.
By Gil Kaufman

Casey Abrams
Photo: Fox

First, the good news for Casey Abrams. Even if voters are on the fence about the emotional bass player, the judges clearly love him and were unequivocal in deploying their once-a-season save on Thursday night's "American Idol."

Now, the bad news: It's probably still not enough to carry him to the winner's circle. If "Idol" history is any indication, the save is mostly a postponement of the inevitable. It helped season eight's Matt Giraud (a wild-card pick to begin with) when he faced elimination in the top seven, but did him no good when he was booted just two weeks later in the top five. Fast-forward to last season, when Michael Lynche faced the chopping block in week nine. The judges busted out the save again, which kept Big Mike around for four more weeks, when he went down in the #4 slot.

Which begged the Friday morning quarterback question: Can a saved contestant win "Idol"?

"The save tends to be a sentimental favorite who possibly doesn't have the breadth of talent ... or a favorite with a fatal flaw, like Giraud's range issue, in which he could do one thing well, but could not present the 'whole package' as Steven Tyler [called it]," said National Public Radio music critic Ann Powers. "Casey is a super-underdog that has a following for his story and his personality, but soon enough, that gives way in an 'Idol' season to performance, and he's too out-of-control, performance-wise. He's too similar to Paul McDonald, who is cuter and more polished."

Powers said it's clear Abrams appeals to producers, possibly because he represents the last vestige of what "Idol" used to be: a competition for real amateur singers who have not been preparing their whole lives for a shot at stardom. "He's really not together, very emotional, he messes up a lot and he wears weird clothes," she said of Abrams' offbeat style, which contrasts with the dreaming-of-stardom-since-childhood packages viewers have seen on many of the other finalists over the past few weeks. "All the others this season set a high bar for professionalism, even the teens, so maybe they want him around because he contributes an unpredictability, which is good TV."

In the end, though, Powers said Abrams doesn't really have a shot at winning the whole thing, though he could survive a bit longer if he takes the judges' advice and calms down next week, perhaps taking a seat and singing a sensual ballad that would show off his less flagrant side.

MTV News "Idol" expert Jim Cantiello was actually charmed by nervous-stomached Abrams' near on-air cookie toss after Thursday's news that he would get another chance. And he thought the save was well-placed.

"Third time's a charm for the judges' save," Cantiello suggested. "For the first time, it didn't feel like an arbitrary 'we better use this because it's the last week we can' moment. Unlike Matt Giraud and Michael Lynche, I can see Casey Abrams lasting more than a couple of weeks post-save. It feels less like the judges are delaying the inevitable, even though I can't imagine Casey taking the 'Idol' crown, let alone making the top four, unless his near-elimination instantly shakes the growl out of his voice and the [creepiness] out of his game face."

"Idol" blogger MJ Santilli of MJ's Big Blog doesn't see how a contestant who has been saved can ever win it all. "Amongst the top nine winners of 'Idol,' some, like Fantasia Barrino for instance, hit the bottom three once as a little wakeup call. Others, like Taylor Hicks and David Cook, never hit bottom at all," she noted. "A contestant that is out-and-out eliminated does not have the fanbase and staying power to make it to the very end. I think Casey will be lucky to make it to the top five now. He's got the 'loser' stink on him."

If nothing else, Cantiello and Santilli were excited that the save guaranteed that Abrams would be on the summer "Idol" tour, where he's likely to provide some fireworks on what might otherwise be a pretty tame affair.

Do you think a saved contestant can ever win "Idol"? Let us know in comments below!

Paramore, 3OH!3, Slash And Others Try To Explain 'Lost' — Hilariously

Rock stars attempt to summarize the inscrutable show before the finale.
By Kyle Anderson

Paramore's Hayley Williams
Photo: MTV News

This weekend, "Lost" fans will be gathered around their television sets to dissect all of the clues and evaluate the final scenes of the twisty, puzzle-filled show, whose finale airs Sunday at 9 p.m.

But there may be a few of you out there who haven't been as invested in the series' six seasons and infinite possibilities and haven't had time to catch up with the 118 episodes that preceded Sunday's finale. Luckily, we reached out to some of the biggest "Lost" fans (and non-fans) in the rock world to help out. We asked everybody a simple question: "Can you explain what 'Lost' is about?"

As fans of the program are aware, that's a pretty loaded inquiry. Still, most everybody was game. "It's about people on an island," Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams offered. "They're on the island, and they get off the island, but they're still on it. And they go back on, and someday they'll be happy, whether they're on it or not."

But the question confused some. For example, 3OH3's Nathaniel Motte got "Lost" confused with another iconic television series. "It's pretty funny," he said. "They all date each other and go to this coffee shop called the Central Perk." (For anybody confused, that's "Friends.")

(Read Blink-182 frontman Mark Hoppus' own words about his conversion to "Lost" fandom.)

For others, the very idea of explaining "Lost" reduced people to little more than gutteral noises and exclamations. Such was the case with Stone Sour and Slipknot member Corey Taylor. "There's a guy, and there's this thing, and what happens is this BLUH!" he said.

Still, perhaps the most direct explanation of the show came from an unlikely source. When asked what "Lost" was about, former Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash admitted that he had never watched any of it.

But when asked to hazard a guess, he replied, "Something's not where it should be." That, quite frankly, might be the best response we've heard.

Can you summarize "Lost" in a single sentence? Try it out in the comments.

We're celebrating the long-awaited conclusion of "Lost" all this week at MTV News! We'll be bringing you exclusive interviews, insightful commentary and, in true "Lost" fashion, maybe even a surprise or two. Head over to the MTV Movies Blog, where our "Lost" Awards continue all this week, and make sure to tune in on Sunday night for our series finale live blog!

On Monday, we learned the names of some of the stars set to appear on Songs For Japan, a compilation album to benefit the ongoing disaster relief efforts in the earthquake- and tsunami-ravaged nation. And on Friday (March 25), not only was the full roster of artists and songs revealed, but the album was made available for purchase on iTunes.

Lady Gaga, Eminem, Beyoncé, Madonna, the Kings of Leon and Katy Perry joined a list of already-announced artists like Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna on the album, which is available worldwide on the iTunes Store for $9.99. Proceeds from the sale of Songs for Japan will benefit the Japanese Red Cross Society.

All in all, 38 artists lent songs to the album, including legends like Bob Dylan, U2, Bruce Springsteen and the late John Lennon; country acts like Keith Urban and Lady Antebellum; rock artists like the Foo Fighters, R.E.M. and Bon Jovi; pop icons like Madonna and Pink; and top hitmakers like Bruno Mars and David Guetta.

All acts appearing on Songs for Japan — and their labels and music publishers — have waived their royalties and proceeds from the worldwide sales of the album to insure the Japanese Red Cross Society receives as much support as possible. The JRCS will use funds from the album to support its ongoing relief efforts and for eventual recovery assistance to the areas hardest hit by the earthquake and subsequent tsunamis. iTunes will also donate its proceeds from the album's worldwide sales to the benefit of the JRCS.

MTV News has been counting down our picks for the Top 25 Songs of 2010, and with everything from Lady Gaga's "Telephone" to Drake's "Fancy" making the list, it's pretty clear that we just wanted to party this year. So when MTV News caught up with some music megastars, we wanted to know what they were jamming to this year.

Katy Perry showed her girl some love with her pick, choosing a seriously fun Rihanna track. "I love 'Only Girl (In the World).' Of course I gotta give it up to my girl!" she said. Rihanna returned the favor to Perry, saying, "My favorite song of the year has to be 'Teenage Dream,' Katy Perry."

Snooki gave a shout-out to Pauly D and his "Beat the Beat" remix, Far East Movement gave love to Bruno Mars' "incredible" songwriting on "Just the Way You Are," and Mike Posner and Keri Hilson both shouted out "F--- You" by Cee Lo Green as their pick.

The Situation went with a non-"Jersey Shore" track: "Definitely Drake. ... Maybe 'Forever' or one of his songs. I'm a big fan of Drake."

The guys from My Chemical Romance showed some rock camaraderie with their picks. "We got into Sleigh Bells and the new M.I.A. record," they shared, adding that they thought the Black Keys' Brothers was "phenomenal."

Paramore leading lady Hayley Williams also flew her rock flag, saying, "I really love the Arcade Fire record. and I love the song 'Month of May.' "

The fellas of Muse showed love to the Black Eyed Peas' track "I Gotta Feeling" and, on the other end of the spectrum, Phoenix's "1901." Crooner Michael Bublé gave some love to fellow adult-contemporary act Train and their song "Hey, Soul Sister."

Christina Milian and Dane Cook both loved Willow Smith's instant smash "Whip My Hair." "It's the song that I put on the minute I wake up in the morning," Cook said. "I whip my hair back and forth."

Hip-hop also got some love. "Community" star Joel McHale opted for Kanye West's "Runaway," Avril Lavigne went for B.o.B and Hayley Williams' "Airplanes," and TLC's Chilli loved another B.o.B track. " 'Beautiful Girls' — is that the name of the song though?" she laughed, referring to "Nothin' on You." "I love that song!"

Other tracks that made the celebrity list included Rick Ross' "B.M.F. (Blowin' Money Fast)," thanks to songwriter Sean Garrett; Dwele went for Gucci Mane's "Wasted"; and Ray J made a case for "Right Above It" by Lil Wayne and Rihanna's "What's My Name?"

Justin Bieber, Eminem Grammy Snubs Prompt Open Letter From Hip-Hop Brand Manager

'The awards show has become a series of hypocrisies and contradictions,' writes Steve Stoute in full page ad.
By Shawn Adler

Ad man, brand manager and occasional consigliere to many of hip-hop's most powerful stars, marketing mogul Steve Stoute took out a full page ad in Sunday's New York Times Style Section blasting the Grammy Awards, its parent organizational, The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), and its president, Neil Portnow, for what he feels is both increasing irrelevance and possible malfeasance.

"Over the course of my 20-year history as an executive in the music business and as the owner of a firm that specializes in in-culture advertising, I have come to the conclusion that the Grammy Awards have clearly lost touch with contemporary popular culture," he wrote in the ad, which took the form of an open letter. "The awards show has become a series of hypocrisies and contradictions, leaving me to question why any contemporary popular artist would even participate."

In particular, Stoute focused on the relatively recent snubs of Eminem, Kayne West, and Justin Bieber, all musicians he believes have been unfairly beaten for awards by inferior artistic and commercial acts.

"We must acknowledge the massive cultural impact of Eminem and Kanye West and how their music is shaping, influencing and defining the voice of a generation," Stoute wrote of the two hip-hop superstars, adding of Bieber, "How is it that Justin Bieber, an artist that defines what it means to be a modern artist, did not win Best New Artist?"

While acknowledging in his letter that the most popular acts aren't always deserving of awards simply on the basis of their commercial success, of particular focus for Stoute is the seeming dichotomy between musicians the award ceremony chooses to honor and musicians the ceremony asks to perform.

"While these very artists that the public acknowledges as being worthy of their money and fandom are snubbed year after year at the Grammys, the awards show has absolutely no qualms in inviting these same artists to perform," he wrote. "Interesting that the Grammys understands cultural relevance when it comes to using Eminem's, Kayne West's or Justin Bieber's name in the billing [but not when handing out trophies]."

Not content to simply attribute these gaps to the general irrelevance or ignorance of the NARAS voters, Stoute goes on to suggest that performances are scheduled much more cynically and crassly, citing this year's Best Album winner Arcade Fire as an example of an act too serendipitous to be coincidental.

"What truly inspired the writing of this letter was that this most recent show fed my suspicions. As the show was coming to a close and just prior to presenting the award for Album of the Year, Arcade Fire performed 'Month of May' only to, surprise, win the category and, in a moment of sheer coincidence, happened to be prepared to perform 'Ready to Start'," he wrote. "Does the Grammys intentionally use artists for their celebrity, popularity and cultural appeal when they already know the winners and then program a show against this expectation?"

According to the official website of the Grammys, it would be impossible for anyone to know the winners of the various awards before the show, as they are delivered in sealed envelopes to the presenters by Deloitte Accounting.

The winners themselves are determined by several rounds of submission and voting, starting with a screening process where 150 "experts" ensure "that each entry is placed in its proper category."

From there, nomination ballots are sent out. Voters are encouraged to vote only in their area of expertise in addition to the four general categories, incidentally the same categories Stoute has the most problems with: Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best New Artist.

The top five vote getters from this process are listed as the official nominees. Finally, ballots are sent out with the new, limited choices to determine a winner.

Not good enough, Stoute says, believing this system is possibly ripe for being corrupted.

"The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences hides behind the 'peer' voting system to escape culpability for not even rethinking this approach," he writes. "You are being called to task at this very moment, NARAS."

Representatives from NARAS have not responded to MTV's request for comment by press time.

Chris Brown Will Still Appear On 'Dancing With The Stars'

ABC reportedly won't press charges against the singer after his backstage tantrum at 'Good Morning America' studios.

Eminem, Lil Wayne's Bonnaroo Gig Continues Hip-Hop's Long Festival History

From early Lollapalooza to this year's Coachella, hip-hop has always had a place at major U.S. music gatherings.
By Gil Kaufman

American music fans had to chuckle back in 2008, when former Oasis co-founder Noel Gallagher raised a giant stink about Jay-Z headlining the venerable Glastonbury Festival. Honestly? Hip-hop doesn't belong at big festivals? C'mon, Noel.

Well, we'll see how much water that big cup of righteous indignation holds in the next few days as fans of Tennessee's Bonnaroo Festival weigh in on the news that not one, but two hip-hop legends — Eminem and Lil Wayne — will top a bill that features a dozen other rappers sprinkled in among the usual cadre of jam-friendly acts, indie faves and the usual classic rock big fish.

While Bonnaroo's organizers have long shunned the "jam-band" festival tag, the annual steamy gathering on a 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee, has hosted its fair share of noodle-tastic talent over the years. But with the booking of arguably two of the three biggest live hip-hop draws on the planet (the third, Jay-Z, played there last year), clearly the 'Roo is going all-in on rap in 2011. Further down the list, this year's fest will also have sets from Atmosphere, Wiz Khalifa and Chiddy Bang.

But from its very first lineup, Bonnaroo has supported rap, booking such indie groups as Blackalicious and Jurassic 5, adding in more over the years, mostly of the variety that appeal to its core audience, including RJD2, frequent guests the Roots, Common, Cypress Hill, El-P and Aesop Rock, and in 2008, Kanye West, M.I.A. and Lupe Fiasco. Though they've always had a place on the bill, rappers began to have a bigger presence by 2009, with the addition of Murs, the Knux, the Beastie Boys and Snoop Dogg. Then again, in 2010, even with Jay on the roster, last year's lineup had rappers in mostly support roles, with Wale, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Jay Electronica, Kid Cudi and B.o.B hitting smaller stages.

With a few exceptions, that's been the norm at the country's major festivals: many of the same hip-hop stars playing on the main stage, with a predictable roster of up-and-coming and established hipster acts on the side stages, though never a critical mass of either outside of purely rap-oriented events.

Hip-hop has long had a headline and side stage presence at Lollapalooza with 1991's inaugural outing featuring Ice T & Body Count, followed by Ice Cube, Basehead, Cypress Hill, House of Pain and Boo-Ya T.R.I.B.E. (1992), Arrested Development, Rage Against the Machine (1993), Beastie Boys, A Tribe Called Quest, Fu-Schnickens and Pharcyde (1994) and Cypress Hill, Coolio, Pharcyde and the Roots (1995).

In later years, the festival invited Wu-Tang Clan, Snoop Dogg and Jurassic 5 before taking a hiatus. When it returned in 2005, there was a modest slate of hip-hop, but by 2006, the list grew to include Common, Kanye, Lady Sovereign, Lyrics Born and Blackalicious. In the years since, the granddaddy of alt festivals in the U.S. has hosted Lupe Fiasco, the Roots, Rhymefest, Kid Sister, K'naan, Snoop, B.o.B and (again) Cyprus Hill.

The reported roster for Lollapalooza in 2011 also features a headlining set from Eminem.

Since 1999, the third big daddy American festival, California's Coachella gathering has followed a similar path by working in college-friendly acts like Rahzel, Q-Bert, Mixmaster Mike, Kool Keith and Kid Koala into a dance- and indie-based talent lineup. It too has tapped a familiar group over the years, including: Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Gang Starr, Mos Def, Jurassic 5, KRS-One, Pharcyde, Dilated Peoples, Beastie Boys, N.E.R.D., Mr. Lif, Eyedea and Abilities, Danger Mouse, Sage Francis, Jean Grae, k-os, Black Star, Kanye, Lyrics Born, Ghostface Killah, Diplo, N.A.S.A., and in 2010, Jay-Z, Street Sweeper Social Club, Die Antwoord, Major Lazer and the Glitch Mob.

This year's Coachella will feature a thinner rap selection, including Lauryn Hill, Duck Sauce, Kanye, Nas & Damian Marley and Wiz Khalifa.

Which music festival are you most looking forward to this year? Talk about it in the comments!
