Chris Brown, Busta Rhymes Rip Avant-Garde BET Awards Performance

Breezy and Buss hit the stage with 'Look At Me Now,' 'She Ain't You' and 'Paper, Scissors, Rock.'

Chris Brown's emotional performance at last year's BET Awards turned out to be a turning point in the singer's once-ailing career, and with his 2011 performance Breezy is reveling in his hard-won fame.

Following a heartfelt, off-prompter intro by host Kevin Hart, Breezy kicked things off with his Michael Jackson-sampling jam "She Ain't You." The singer took the stage on a raised platform in the middle of the stage surrounded by a cluster of monitors splashed with psychedelic designs. Breezy worked the midtempo hit in an avant-garde gray suit with voluminous pant legs and a cape fashioned out of a jacket. But the F.A.M.E. singer ditched the fashion-forward ensemble in favor of a black jumpsuit to helm his woozy, Diplo-produced banger, "Look At Me Now," as a crew of dancers in similarly street black hoodies joined him onstage.

Then Busta Rhymes emerged from a brightly lit cube flanked by dancers in eerie, transparent masks illuminated by blinking lights. The Back on My B.S. lyricist wowed the Shrine with his legendary, breathless, rapid-fire flow — much of which was obscured by super-cautious censors — sporting a unique, black jacket with enormous, ridged sleeves. After ripping his verse, the MC dropped the mic and walked off. Breezy took back the stage for his F.A.M.E. cut "Paper, Scissors, Rock," busting out some agile choreography and finishing up the performance with an athletic flip off the stage.

When speaking to MTV News earlier this year about how the all-star collabo came together, beatsmith Afrojack gave snaps to Busta's hypnotic flow.

"Busta's verse on it is really sick," he said. "It's like I can't even hear what he said, but I love the part where he goes [mimics Busta's rapid flow], and then pauses and goes rapping really quickly. And I don't know how to do it, I don't even try. But it was really, really cool."

The bigwigs at BET are also clearly feeling Breezy's chart-topper. "Look at Me Now" took the Best Collaboration award directly after the set.

Eminem And B.o.B Collaboration Leaks Online

The track, 'Things Get Worse,' features Em revisiting his Slim Shady persona.
By Jayson Rodriguez

Holy split personality!

An unreleased Eminem and Bobby Ray collaboration was unearthed online Thursday (February 24) that finds the two MCs tapping into their respective manic alter egos, Slim Shady and B.o.B

The mid-tempo track, "Things Get Worse," harkens back to Em's early days and his button-pushing rhymes.

"Note to Jessica Simpson, let's go with the tuna casserole," Eminem raps in one of the verses. "'Cause I used to love her hooters, now Carmen Electra's cuter/ Strap an extension cord to her arm and electrocute her/ I'm off my f---ing meds but I'm on an electric scooter/ I might just scoot by and shoot my mom in the neck with Rugers/ Spit in Jason's face while I vomit on Freddy Krueger/ They can't even get Jeffrey Dahmer to pet the cougar."

"There's no need to say sh-- you already know, the question is just how far will this go," B.o.B chants on the chorus. "'Cause I will never lay down and I will never let up."

"I guess things are gonna get much worse 'fore they get better," Em chimes in.

The song appeared on the blog of one of B.o.B's managers, but there was no message indicating where the track will wind up or how long ago it was recorded.

After scoring three top 10 hits on the pop charts with his debut album, B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray, the rapper/singer said he wanted to return to his more lyrical roots before starting his next project.

In December, he released a mixtape, No Genre, that reminded his early supporters of his abilities, which he displays capably on "Things Get Worse."

"I pass by people on the street, they seem like sleeping zombies," he raps. "Stiffer than a therapeutic pair of jeans you running/ So can you hear me coming?/ Eminem, this beat is absolutely disgusting/ It's probably got diseases on it."

It's not the first time the two stars have appeared on the same track, as Eminem also was featured on B.o.B's Grammy-nominated "Airplanes, Part II" remix.

Have you heard Eminem and B.o.B's "Things Get Worse" collaboration? If so, share your opinion in the comments.

B.o.B Plays The Hits, Wiz Khalifa Pays Tribute To Nate Dogg At SXSW

Janelle Monae also wowed audience on Thursday at Atlantic Records' showcase in Austin, Texas.
By James Montgomery

AUSTIN, Texas -- If you decide to call your South by Southwest showcase "Killers Lasers Papers," and then find out, much to your dismay, that neither the Killer (Cee Lo Green, whose 2010 album is called The Lady Killer) or the Laser (Lupe Fiasco, whose Lasers currently sits atop the Billboard albums chart) are actually going to show up, what do you do?

Well, if you're Atlantic Records, you simply plug in another of your chart-topping stars, add your critically acclaimed futurist-funk chanteuse and keep right on trucking. Things are that easy for the label these days.

So, on Thursday night at Austin's La Zona Rosa, instead of Green and Fiasco, SXSW-ers were treated to semi-surprise sets from B.o.B and Janelle Monáe -- both of whom filled in admirably -- plus Wiz Khalifa (who, with an upcoming album titled Rolling Papers, made up the "Papers" portion of the evening and, unlike Green and Fiasco, actually showed up), and no one was the wiser. Like we said, when you preside over a hip-hop roster as stacked as Atlantic's, you can afford to change things up on the fly.

Taking the stage after performances by up-and-comers XV and Donnis, B.o.B bounced his way through a tight 30-minute set, one that drew predominantly from his #1 debut, The Adventures of Bobby Ray, but also included a few nods to both his past as an underappreciated Atlanta MC (back when he was trying to get a tip at Subway) and a mixtape staple.

So while he weaved through Adventures cuts like "Bet I" (featuring an onstage assist from Playboy Tre), "Magic," "Nothin' on You" and, of course, "Airplanes" (all of which featured pre-recorded bits from their various big-name co-stars), B.o.B truly came to life when he was tackling tracks that were either not his or from his not-so-distant past. In fact, he couldn't wait to get to them, even going so far as to cut "Nothin' on You" short to declare, "I feel like y'all hear that sh-- on the radio all the time," before taking requests from the audience.

He then dove headlong into Tre's "Talking 'Bout Her," spitting over a gnarled electro whomp and, backed by his live band, tore though "Batman Flow" and "Beast Mode" (from his No Genre mixtape) plus "Haterz Everywhere," an early street single from 2007. And rather than be mystified, the crowd ate up every second of it . a point of validation not just for B.o.B's past successes, but for his future promise, too.

And speaking of future promise, Wiz Khalifa followed with a loose and laconic set that featured plenty of nods to his upcoming Rolling Papers album (due March 29), not to mention a swagger that belies his years.

Loping across the stage with a red Solo cup his hands, and backed by his Taylor Gang posse, Khalifa may have made the occasional reference to pot smoking -- at one point asking, "Where my ladies at? Y'all know how to roll a joint?" -- but his performance was anything but stony baloney. Instead, whether he was working through songs from his Cabin Fever and Kush & Orange Juice mixtapes ("Phone Numbers," "Gang Bang," "Waken Baken") or pimping Papers' release with new tracks, Wiz displayed not only a deft lyrical dexterity but some genuine grind, too.

He snarled through "Taylor Gang" and "On My Level," dropped phrases like "Time is money so I went and bought a Rolex" and "We wake up drunk, go to sleep f---ed up," and made the crowd go bananas with his hit "Black and Yellow." But really, perhaps his most lucid moment came toward the end of his set, when he stopped the music and spoke openly about the late Nate Dogg, calling the G-Funk legend "one of my biggest heroes" and running through an impromptu tribute performance that featured he and the Taylor Gang singing some of Dogg's most memorable verses, including (fittingly enough) his off-the-cuff "Hey hey hey hey/ Smoke weed every day," from Dr. Dre's "The Next Episode."

"Rest in peace, Nate Dogg," Wiz then announced.

Closing out the night -- also in tribute to the red-hot soul-and-funk sessions of luminaries like James Brown and Isaac Hayes -- was Janelle Monáe, the pint-sized, pompadoured powerhouse who wowed critics with her 2010 effort, The ArchAndroid. And while she may not have been the logical choice to wrap things up, she didn't let that stop her for a second.

Over her air-tight set -- which covered most of her latest album -- she strutted and preened, posed and popped, backed by a vamping, high-stepping show band and a whole lot of artful costuming. There wasn't a moment that wasn't filled with oddball dancing druids or wildly bearded Hassidim, and whether Monáe was leading her full ensemble through standouts like "Dance or Die" or "Wondaland," performing a jaw-dropping version of the standard "Smile" or ceding the stage to her guitarist for a deep-fried psych version of the national anthem, the singer put on an awe-inspiring show, the kind where the folks in the audience are reduced to simple shaking their heads in disbelief. Not bad for a last-minute fill-in.

This will mark the first time that Adele has graced the VMAs stage. The British chanteuse is up for seven nods for her emotional "Rolling in the Deep" video, including Best Female Artist, Best Pop Video, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Direction, Best Editing and the night's big prize, Video of the Year.

Brown will return to the stage, after making his unforgettable VMA debut back in 2007. His eye-popping video for "Look at Me Now," which features Wayne and Busta Rhymes, is up for multiple Moonmen at the big show, including Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Collaboration.

"I am excited about my nominations and to be back on the VMA stage," Brown said in a statement. "I have a special performance planned for my wonderful fans."

Wayne himself is also slated to take the stage. He's got some big nominations up for grabs at the show including best Hip-Hop Video for his "6 Foot, 7 Foot" clip.

"Being a nominee and performer on the VMAs once again is an honor because everyone doesn't get that opportunity," Wayne said in a statement. The event coincides with the August 29 release of his upcoming album. "Looking forward to performing on the show, and having Tha Carter IV drop the same week!"

The night is shaping up to be quite the gathering, with stars like Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Nicki Minaj, Kanye West and Pitbull up for Moonmen at the show. Perry leads the pack with an unprecedented four videos earning a total of nine nominations, including Video of the Year, Best Female Video and Best Pop Video.

3OH!3 Re-Create The Internet On The Internet In New 'Double Vision' Video

Clip is complete with banner ads and an arrow scrolling down the page that is the video.
By James Montgomery

3OH!3 in their video for "Double Vision"
Photo: Photo Finish Records

When we last saw the guys in 3OH!3, they were going green-screen crazy in the video for "My First Kiss," a clip that took their patented brand of anti-subtlety to newfound heights. Simply put, it was a video all about kissing. A lot of kissing.

In their new video for "Double Vision," they've ditched the digital effects and gone DIY, with a clip that re-creates the sprawling ephemera of the Internet with a bunch of man-made tricks. In a lot of ways, it recalls the work of Michel Gondry, who eschews big-budget effects in favor of in-camera trickery and rough-hewn, eternally moving set pieces. And really, did you ever think you'd see a time when 3OH!3 would be compared to a noted French auteur?

Working with director Evan Bernard (he of the Beastie Boys lyrical shout-out and eye-catching clips like Green Day's "Minority" and the Ben Folds Five's "Army"), 3OH!3 have done something pretty great with "Double Vision," and it's no stretch to say it's their shining moment, video-wise at least. Because aside from the concept itself — let's remake the Internet using only stuff found at most Home Depots — there are at least a dozen moments in the clip that are genuinely clever, too: subtle touches like the arrow icon that continually scrolls the screen downward (it's controlled by a long white pipe held off-camera) and the rainbow-colored loading wheel Sean Foreman picks up and spins (while he freezes in place). There's the way the "live" footage is presented — as video clips that only spring to life when they're "clicked" on — and a bit that pays homage to the now-famous "Daft Hands" YouTube clip (and I'm pretty sure they got the "Daft Bodies" girls to do it).

And while, sure, the inclusion of those "Plenty of Fish" ads — last seen in Lady Gaga's "Telephone" video — is rather cloying, they're at least done cleverly. And really, when you think about it, aren't banner ads supposed to be annoying? (For maximum annoyance, Bernard should've cast some wenches to re-create those "Evony" ads.)

So "Double Vision" works on many levels — it's sort of "Inception-y" in that regard (the Internet ... on the Internet) — and it's because of all that wink-winkery that it works as well as it does. It's a great concept, greatly executed. And it only proves that perhaps the guys in 3OH!3 would do well to show a little restraint now and then ... a video doesn't need hyper-color explosions and kissing co-eds to be successful. Though, for that to happen, they'd probably have to release a song called "Subtlety." Who knows, maybe they'll do it on their next record.

What do you think of 3OH!3's "Double Vision" video? Let us know in the comments.

3OH!3 Talk 'Rad' New Album, Streets Of Gold

'We were inspired by gold,' Nathaniel Motte jokes to MTV News.
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias

3OH!3
Photo: MTV News

For 3OH!3's album Streets of Gold, out Tuesday (June 29), they decided to seek inspiration from things they know a lot about — like partying. Would you expect anything else from the "Don't Trust Me" singers?

"Want did really well and kept doing better, so we didn't really have time [to make a follow-up]," Nathaniel Motte told MTV News of their breakthrough album. "We finally carved out some time to make this album, which is rad. We were inspired by gold."

The duo also wrote music about their new rock-star lifestyle. "I think there's a few completely different things on the album," Sean Foreman said. "Some of it's really fun and just about kind of our life on the road and parties. There's some heavier songs [too]."

But don't think the party-song dudes have left behind the sounds that made them household names. If you hear any new vibes on the album, they say it's just because they have grown as musicians. "While we were touring, we managed to work in the studio, and I think we've learned so much as songwriters and as producers making music and making tracks," Motte said, adding that this album is a "more developed [and] more defined album. It's inspired by a lot of stuff."

Some of that stuff includes first love, as evidenced on their Ke$ha-fied single "First Kiss," and, well, house parties. "I think we stretched. As much diversity as there was on the last album, we just pulled that and stretched it further," Foreman said. "You get stuff on either end of the spectrum — like 'House Party' is crazy and has the craziest production, and it's just a fun anthem that you'd want to sing with all your friends. And then there's stuff on the other end of it, where it might be a little bit more singing and stuff like that."

Are you looking forward to 3OH!3's latest album? Let us know in the comments!
